Terms of Use & Disclaimer

Last updated: October 28, 2026

These terms apply to the UMST app, its source code, its installer and this website (together, "UMST"). By downloading, installing or using UMST you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use UMST.

1. License

UMST is free, open-source software released under the MIT License. The license governs your rights to use, copy, modify and distribute the software. If these terms and the license conflict regarding the software, the license controls.

2. No warranty

UMST is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.

UMST shows information it receives from calendars and services you connect. It may be incomplete, delayed or wrong (for example if a service changes its feed, your connection fails, or a time zone is misread). Always check important dates, such as assignment deadlines, exams and meetings, in the original source. UMST is not responsible for missed deadlines, late submissions, grades, missed meetings or any decision you make based on what it shows.

3. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event shall the authors, contributors or copyright holders of UMST be liable for any claim, damages or other liability, whether direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary, including loss of data, profits, grades or opportunities, arising from or in connection with UMST or its use, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

Some jurisdictions don't allow certain warranty exclusions or liability limits, so some of the above may not apply to you. In that case liability is limited to the smallest amount the law allows.

4. Your responsibilities

5. Third-party services

UMST connects directly from your Mac to services you choose. Those services are operated by other companies under their own terms and privacy policies. UMST has no control over them and isn't responsible for their availability, content, changes or how they handle your data.

The installer also installs Show Desktop, a separate open-source app by its own author, downloaded unmodified from its official GitHub releases (you can opt out). Show Desktop is licensed under its own MIT license, which provides it "as is" without warranty, and these terms don't cover it.

6. Privacy

UMST collects no personal data: no accounts, analytics, tracking or servers. Details are in the Privacy Policy. This website uses no cookies, analytics or third-party scripts; it is hosted on GitHub Pages, which may keep standard server logs under GitHub's privacy statement.

7. Trademarks

UMST is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Instructure (Canvas), Anthology (Blackboard), D2L (Brightspace), Moodle, PowerSchool (Schoology), Doist (Todoist), Asana, Atlassian (Trello), Flexibits or any other company named in UMST or on this site. All product names, logos and trademarks belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify the services UMST can work with. Mac and macOS are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.

The UMST name and app icon are the project's own. The demo on the home page is an illustration built from made-up sample data.

8. Contributions

Contributions to UMST are accepted under the MIT License as described in CONTRIBUTING.md.

9. Copyright concerns

If you believe something in UMST or on this site infringes your rights, open an issue on GitHub or contact the maintainer through GitHub, and include enough detail to identify the material. It will be reviewed and removed promptly if appropriate.

10. Changes

These terms may be updated. Changes are published on this page and in the project's public history on GitHub. Continuing to use UMST after a change means you accept the updated terms.
